In this newsletter, FCS outlines six scholarship and degree Tips for Success. Whether you're attending a four year school or considering getting an associate or bachelor degree, career training, or GED coursework, these tips will get you on track.
Tip #1: Create a Budget
When planning for your education, finances can be the biggest factor. Do your homework and find out how much you should expect to pay for tuition, room and board and books and supplies. Here is a sample annual budget for a four year school:
Tuition/Fees: $5,749
Room & Board: $6,780
Books & Supplies: $1,050
Misc. Expenses: $2,750
Budget Amount : $16,329
Many online schools are considerably cheaper - especially if you live at home and consider a junior or vocation school. Getting a degree online can be much less than the cost of attending a 4 year school.
Discuss with your family how much they can contribute, then look at student loans, grants and scholarships. Some scholarships can only be applied towards tuition. Other scholarships, like the FCS Scholarship, can be used to pay for tuition, room and board, books, even a plane trip home for the holidays.
Tip #2: Broaden your College Search
A recent article in Newsweek magazine reported that many top tier universities, including Harvard, Stanford, Yale and Columbia were eliminating tuition and many fees. For many students, this would mean attending a school like Stanford could actually be cheaper than a local school or online degree program.
If you thought that going away to school would be too expensive, take a close look at tuition and scholarship and grant opportunities before your make your final decision. Conversely, students who want to go to a two or four year school should weigh the pros and cons of an online degree program. Most online programs are very flexible - which means you can live at home, keep your job and continue spending time with your family. |
Tip #3: Avoid these Scholarship Application Mistakes!
Nearly every scholarship requires registration. You usually have only one chance, so make it your best! Read ALL of the directions before starting the application. Pay close attention to the deadline. Don't send in a sloppy application with spelling and grammar errors. Always have a friend or family member read over your application. Your parents might have told you, if it's worth doing at all, it's worth doing right!
If you're writing an essay, highlight the positive aspects of your life. What sets you apart from other candidates? Are you involved in your community? Did you ever face adversity and come out on top? Admissions counselores recomend that students get creative with their essay; a funny or intriguing essay might resonate well with the scholarship administrators.
That's all for this week! Please stay tuned for next week's newsletter!
Thank You and Good Luck!
