If you've been reading previous newsletters, you're familiar with all kinds of scholarships, student loans, FAFSA and work-study programs. This week we're going to take a look at a different kind of student aid - government college grants.

Government College Grants
Unlike student loans, grants - like scholarships - do not need to be paid back. The first step to getting a student loan is filling out the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid). The Federal Pell Grant Program provides need-based grants to low-income undergraduate students. Students may use their grants at any one of approximately 5,400 participating institutions.

Academic Competitiveness Grant
You may be eligible for a new student aid grant program called the Academic Competitiveness Grant (ACG). During an eligible student’s first academic year, the maximum ACG is $750; the maximum ACG for a student’s second academic year is $1,300.

To receive an ACG, you must:
* Be a U.S. citizen
* Be Federal Pell Grant eligible
* Be enrolled full-time in a degree program
* Have completed a high school program of study
* Not have been previously enrolled in an undergraduate program (if you are a first-year student)
* Have at least a cumulative 3.0 GPA if you are a second-year student)

Jumpstart Scholarship - This brand new scholarship will host their first scholarship drawing on October 31st. To register, fill out the short application and submit a short (100-150 words) essay on why you deserve the scholarship. Scholarship Amount: $4,000.00

National Smart Grant
The National Smart Grant, which stands for National Science and Mathematics Access to Retain Talent, is similar to the ACG grant. Both grants encourage high school students to take more challenging courses in high school. This grant will provide up to $4,000 for each of the third and fourth years of undergraduate study to full-time students who are eligible for a Federal Pell Grant and who are majoring in physical, life, or computer sciences, mathematics, technology, or engineering or in a foreign language determined critical to national security.

Online Grant Resources
GrantStation - an interactive website that allows grantseekers to identify potential funding sources for their programs or projects, and mentors them through the grantseeking process.

GrantsAlert - this site's goal is to make life easier for those searcing for education grants. Features a search by category, state and keyword.

Edutopia - The George Lucas Foundation provides a one-stop shop for grant research. This site provides links to a variety of grant resources.

That's all for this week. Don't forget to register for the November 14th FCS scholarship drawing, and stay tuned for next week's newsletter!

Thank You and Good Luck!

"Throughout my life, like many friends and family members, I have had to overcome multiple adversities; varying from commuting to school every day by six in the morning, to finding a way every year how to avoid taking out immense loans under my parents name in order to pay for my education. After hearing I am the winner for FCS, I had a sigh of relief knowing that I will not have to stress about paying my tuition for the following year, and that my parents most importantly won’t have to take out more loans. Thank you FCS, you have given me like many, the opportunity to focus solely on our education that will forever change our future."
