In the United States, many students don't consider college an option because of the price tag. But with online schools and community colleges, its becoming easier than ever to be the first from your family to get a degree.
If you've been reading recent newsletters, you've learned some of the different ways to pay for school. But many parents and students don't have a good idea exactly how much a college degree will cost. We'll explore that in this week's newsletter.
Four Year Colleges
Many high school students dream of going away to a four year college and getting a degree from a reputable school. This can be the most expensive option. Here are some estimates for campus schools:
Annual Tuition
* Ivy League college - $35,374
* Private college - $27,677
* Public college - $12,841
* Community College - $4,552
In a recent newsletter we discussed grants. Most students can receive some kind of grant from the government. This can drop the price of tuition at a private university up to 25%. There is more funding for community colleges, so with grants you could be spending only $2,532 a year on tuition - almost a $2,000 off the total price.

The Costs of College
US News recently reported on the hidden costs of college:
Direct Costs
* Tuition - the cost of classes
* Fees - gym, health clinic, lab, library, technology etc.
* Room - or rent
* Board - or food
Indirect Costs
* Books and Computer -Textbooks can cost over $1,000 a year!
* Health Insurance - Students may have to buy a college health plan
* Transportation - between home and campus
Online Degree Costs
Success Degrees reports that the average cost for an online associate's degree is $9,000, and the average cost for a bachelor is $15,000. There is a great deal of competition between online schools, so shop around to find the most value for your college degree.
It's important to note that most students at four year universities don't have a job on the side, while the majority of students studying online are employed. It can be very difficult juggling work, online classes, family and a little spare time, but its up to you to decide if its worth it.
That's all for this week. Don't forget to register for the November 14th FCS scholarship drawing, and stay tuned for next week's newsletter!
Thank You and Good Luck!
