FCS Newsletter - Minority Scholarships
FCS Newsletter: April 17, 2009
Next Drawing: April 30, 2009

Hello FCS Subscriber! If you're looking for a scholarship and consider yourself a minority, you are in luck. One of the largest blocks of scholarships are those reserved for racial minorities. All three of the largest racial minorities in the United States have scholarship funds reserved just for them.

Regardless of your gender, ethnicity or education level, FreeCollegeScholarships wants to help you go to school. As long as you're over 18 years of age and live in the U.S., you can apply for the FCS 10k college scholarship. The next scholarship drawing is on April 30th. Click Here to Register

(FOUR FUNDS) In this newsletter, we’ll cover the three biggest funds that many philanthropic organizations, corporations, and even individuals give money to so that the funds can give out scholarships to you and other students who belong to racial minorities. The three funds are the Hispanic Scholarship Fund, the United Negro College Fund, and the American Indian College Fund. A slightly smaller fund is that of LULAC, the League of United Latin American Citizens.

The Negro College Fund
This fund has, “supported approximately 65,000 students at over 900 colleges and universities with approximately $113 million in grants and scholarships”. In addition to fundraising college tuition money for black students, it administers the scholarship funds for thirty-nine private historically black colleges and universities. Thirty-nine separate scholarships are administered. Each scholarship has its own eligibility criteria, open/close date, and required documentation. Get started here and click on a scholarship, read the requirements, link to the online application, and apply by completing the application process.

The Hispanic Scholarship Fund
This fund is the, “nation’s largest provider of college financial aid for Latino students. HSF awards nearly 4,200 scholarships exceeding $26.5 million dollars.” There are four categories of scholarships: college students, community college transfer students, high school students and Gates Millennium Scholars. Get started here and identify the category(ies) appropriate to you and click on each one. Determine the scholarships for which you are eligible. Then click on Apply to Scholarships Now. Fill out the applications and apply online.

The American Indian College Fund
“The fund disburses approximately 5,000 scholarships annually for American Indian students.” Many of the scholarships are for students wishing to attend Tribal colleges. However, a large number of scholarships are open (recipients may attend their college of choice). For the open scholarships, contact Debra Reed at 800-776-3863. For the Tribal colleges scholarships, get started here. Click on the Click Here button under Tribal College General Scholarship Program, and apply online.

Lulac – The League of United Latin American Citizens
Close to 100 scholarships a year are awarded through the League. Get more information on the LULAC scholarships here. To apply for the LULAC scholarships, click on the application for the scholarship(s) of interest, complete the application form on line and send the completed application to LULAC/LNSF.

No Limitations
Don’t limit yourself. While these are the funds with the largest number of minority scholarships, you can still apply for the vast majority of other scholarships. Don’t rest on your minority laurels (advantage). Remember, the more scholarships you apply for, the greater the amount of money you will have for college.

That's all for this week. Do not forget to register for the April 30th FCS scholarship drawing, and stay tuned for next week's newsletter!

Good Luck!

January 2009 FCS 10k Scholarship Finalist: Alisha Brown Name: Alisha Brown
Hometown: Pembroke Pines, FL
Drawing Date: Jan. 23rd
"I grew up watching my mother work two, sometimes three, jobs at a time and still struggle to support two children on her own. She always pushed us to do our best to succeed. So in my mind not going to college was not an option for me, however as I finished high school and looked into financing, I could not see my dream of being a college graduate began to fade. As I would look in the mirror, I saw history repeating itself. Here I was, a single mother, earning just above minimum wage, still waiting for the opportunity to go to college.
That's when I happened across the scholarship drawing which I entered. Nearly two weeks later I received a phone call stating that I had been chosen as the winner. I was so excited, I did not know what to say or how to react. I could not believe it! Now I can go to college, pursue a degree in nursing and career I can be proud of, and give my son an understanding of how far persistence can take him."
