FCS Newsletter - University Scholarships
FCS Newsletter: April 23, 2009
Next Drawing: April 30, 2009

Hello FCS Subscriber! One of the largest sources of scholarships is the university you attend or want to attend. These scholarships are broken down into: 1) Scholarships and grants administered by the financial aid office available to all or a large number of students and, 2) Scholarships and grants administered by the department available only to those with a major taught in that department.

In this newsletter we will talk about getting scholarships and grants from both university sources (the department where you study and the university financial aid office). Let’s look at an example of how to get university monies. Let’s say, for example, that you want to be a Petroleum Engineer. You will probably be enrolled in the Engineering Department. This department will have a number of scholarships that it will award to engineering students. But the university will have even more scholarships and grants administered by the financial aid department.

Google Search Universities for your Major
Narrow your choices by doing key word google searches. First determine the universities you want to consider. Start with the large public universities in your state since they are usually less expensive and have more scholarships. For example, if you live in Texas, you might start your search by entering Texas Universities Petroleum Engineering. The University of Texas in Austin, Texas A&M in College Station, and Texas Tech University in Lubbock would be your logical first choices.

Call Departamental Scholarship/Grant Chair
Next, call and get departmental scholarship/grant information. Call (512) 471-3161, the departmental phone number for the Cockrell School of Engineering at the University of Texas. Ask for the name and extension of the faculty member who chairs the departmental Scholarship and Financial Aid Committee. The department receptionist will transfer your call. Next, make similar calls to the engineering department at Texas A&M [(979) 845-1321] and at Texas Tech University [(806) 742-3573]. These numbers were obtained on the internet by first accessing the site for the university and then the site for the department.

Telephone Calls Make Memorable Impressions
It is far better to call than to send an email. The person you speak with will head up the committee that decides who will get scholarships and grants given out by the department. You will make a more memorable impression when you speak on the phone.

Contact University's Scholarship/Grant or Financial Aid Office
Don’t forget to apply for university administered scholarships and grants. Use the internet. For the University of Texas try this site and Texas Scholarships. Find these sites by searching University of Texas financial aid or University of Texas scholarships and grants.

Apply This Approach For Your Major
This same process can be applied to your major and your grouping of possible universities. Keep in mind that there are many scholarships and grants that are not awarded each year because nobody meeting the requirements applies. Get yours. Apply!

That's all for this week. Do not forget to register for the April 30th FCS scholarship drawing, and stay tuned for next week's newsletter!

Good Luck!

"I grew up watching my mother work two, sometimes three, jobs at a time and still struggle to support two children on her own. She always pushed us to do our best to succeed. So in my mind not going to college was not an option for me, however as I finished high school and looked into financing, I could not see my dream of being a college graduate began to fade. As I would look in the mirror, I saw history repeating itself. Here I was, a single mother, earning just above minimum wage, still waiting for the opportunity to go to college.
That's when I happened across the scholarship drawing which I entered. Nearly two weeks later I received a phone call stating that I had been chosen as the winner. I was so excited, I did not know what to say or how to react. I could not believe it! Now I can go to college, pursue a degree in nursing and career I can be proud of, and give my son an understanding of how far persistence can take him."
